X Might Replace DMs With New XChat Messaging
May 16, 2025

A wave of confusion hit social media this week after a viral tweet suggested that X (formerly known as Twitter) may be removing its direct messaging (DM) feature entirely. But according to follow-up posts from employees at the company, that’s not quite the full story.
It all started when a software engineer at X responded to a user’s question about message requests, saying, “No, not like request messages but like the whole entire DMs will be gone soon.” The comment ignited concern that DMs would vanish from the platform completely.
However, shortly after the tweet began circulating, other X employees clarified that the platform isn’t deleting DMs, but instead rewriting the entire system. One engineer reassured users, writing, “Obviously X would not delete messaging. Rewrite instead.”
What’s Really Happening? Meet XChat.
According to reports from Dexerto, the platform’s DM system is undergoing a substantial overhaul and may soon be rebranded as “XChat.” While not officially confirmed by the company, leaks suggest XChat could include:
- File sharing support (PDFs, documents, etc.)
- Voice messages
- Message deletion for both parties
- Full end-to-end encryption
If accurate, this would represent a major leap from the current, minimal direct messaging system – bringing X closer to full-featured messengers like WhatsApp or Telegram.
What About Old DMs?
There’s still uncertainty around what happens to existing DM threads once the upgrade goes live. X has not yet clarified whether older messages will be retained, migrated, or deleted during the transition to XChat.
As the platform continues its evolution under Elon Musk’s leadership, X is clearly focused on expanding functionality across multiple features – whether in ads, video, or private messaging.
